Perspective and Approachlibrary

Higher education continues to be a major field for research and graduate training, and serves as an enormous resource for the continuation of the nation's wellbeing. But we now know that it is vitally important that we pay close attention to the early formative years, else we will never realize the promise of many young people who "drop out" or “burn out” before they ever catch a vision of what they might achieve in the future.

School is a place of systematic judgments made by others through objective examinations, peer relationships, and self-directed assessment. Education is also about goal-setting, and this process can take a variety of forms:

  • Vocational goals are of primary concern for many students. The role of education in supplying trained human resources for a technical and complex society is a vital concern for our country.
  • Humanistic goals, variously reflected in the liberal arts and humanities, embrace life-long learning habits and appreciation for philosophy, literature, the arts, language and mathematics.
  • Critical thinking is integral to education at all levels, for intellectual discretion and analytical ability is the hallmark of any educated person. The sciences, communication skills, theoretical argument, and facility with abstract numerical symbols help people to recognize assumptions and to exercise reason in all areas of life, whether that be politics, religion, education, the arts, or the corporate world.
  • Personal relations skills are developed in schools at all levels. School is a time for any student to develop self-understanding, build new friendships, clarify standards of behavior, explore the significance of individuality, and develop tolerance for others different from the self. It is also a place to become conscious of the broader human community, whether the neighborhood, the nation or the world.

The nation must never neglect our schools, nor shortchange those who dedicate their lives to young people as teachers and administrators. Our nation's educational institutions are our backbone and our lifeline to the future. All education programs must have full access to resources, not just within their own specific boundaries but up and down the scale, for what affects education at one level affects education at all levels.
